Although they claim to have science on their side, deniers are playing politics. People may believe in man-made climate change, and may be willing to do the right thing now, they say. But that could change when carbon taxes or other possible costs hit home. “It’s easy enough to say what we should do until you realize there are penalties and sacrifices you have to make.” Once that’s clear, they predict gleefully, people “may be more willing to look at the alternative explanations.” In other words, people’s scientific perspective will change once they are called upon to actually do something about climate change. “Oh, I have to ration my carbon emissions? In that case, I no longer believe in global warming.”
