If we could pick one thing that our government could do to have a profound impact on pollution, our electricity crisis, greenhouse gas emissions, and the safety and sustainability of our cities, it would be to convert massively to ground-source heating and cooling of homes and businesses. This could be achieved by the following very simple regulation: require special permission to install anything other than ground-source (geothermal) heating and cooling systems in new homes, shopping centers, schools and businesses.
