The white lemuroid possum has been known to thrive in the cooler temperatures of the higher altitude rainforests of far north Queensland. But James Cook University’s Professor Stephen Williams is concerned it has not been seen for three years, unlike the darker coloured members of the species who live at lower altitudes.

The World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet Index currently tracks around 4,000 species of birds, fish, mammals, reptiles and amphibians around the world. WWF reports that there has been a one-third decline in world biodiversity over the past 35 years as a result of habitat loss and wildlife trade. WWF also warns that climate change may accentuate this trend.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development released a report on the environmental outlook for 2030 that calls for immediate action on climate change. The report, compiled every 5 years, looks at climate change, water shortages, energy needs, biodiversity loss, transportation, agriculture and fisheries.

Marine predators are on the verge of extinction, but the fishing industry still rips the environment to shreds with impunity.

The Toronto Zoo is aiming to launch an ambitious $250 million fundraising campaign with a green mandate, which will include an educational centre focusing on biodiversity and sustainability issues.
